UPDATED April 11:

The UPS will reinstate a $0.29 per pound surcharge on all shipments from China, Hong Kong, and Macau entering the U.S. as of April 13.

The parcel carrier did not list an end date for the “Surge Fee,” which has a rate that can be adjusted at any time. The fee applies to a shipment’s billable weight and is subject to the fuel surcharge.

Original Annoucement:

UPS implemented a new “Surge Fee” on March 16 of $0.29 per pound on all shipments from China, Hong Kong and Macau going to the US. It will remain active through March 29 and is based on the billable weight of the shipment. Note that it is also subject to the UPS fuel surcharge.

From the carrier, “Our goal is to ensure that we can continue to meet our customers’ shipping needs without compromising the quality or timeliness of service expected from us.”

The latest edition of the Surge Fee adds to an already large list of fees and surchrages. It also adds complexity to China-to-US shippers already preparing for the end of the de minimis exemption.
