Carrier Surcharge Update

The following is copied from a recent email that FedEx sent to its customers.

FedEx Delivery Signature Update

As we continue to support the global supply chain, we’re committed to keeping customers, team members and your packages safe. We will reinstate effective September 15, 2021 our physical signature requirements for paid, premium signature services and commercial deliveries* across the U.S. for the following signature types:

• Adult Signature Required (ASR)

• Direct Signature Required (DSR)

• Indirect Signature Required (ISR)

The reinstatement of signature requirements applies to shipments delivered by FedEx Express®, FedEx Ground®, FedEx Home Delivery®, FedEx Freight®**, FedEx Office® and FedEx OnSite locations.

Companies will recall that these signature requirements were suspended back in March 2020 as one of the first pandemic-related service changes FedEx implemented.  At the time, all signature requirements were suspended except for Adult Signatures to help maintain safety for its drivers and those signing for deliveries.

This change comes on the heels of several international surcharge increases announced by FedEx (click here).  It’s understandable if shippers feel they’re getting mixed signals about the state of COVID – there continue to be lagging effects on supply chains worldwide and these recent International Peak Surcharge increases are very targeted and specific. Companies need to remain diligent in making sure the impact of these, and future, surcharge updates are clearly understood.
